I thought I would start off this lovely subject by showcasing my amazing school lunches! I never thought I would say this before coming here but I live for school lunches now! Compared to the UK they are much healthier, varied and most importantly, delicious. Having been at my school almost a month I've yet to have the same meal twice so each time is a revelation. A few things I've noticed - there's ALWAYS (without fail) kimchi, rice, soup and some form of dessert or sweet. Teacher's portions are much bigger than the kids (thankfully), when you've finished - if you have some food left you should scoop it all into the soup bowl (so try and leave a bit); makes for easier disposal, and of course, you don't have a drink with your meal - instead you take a shot of barley tea just before you leave the canteen! Biggest bonus - the lunches are cheap! Max 50,000 won a month. Bargain when you think how much food you get, how good it is and how much time it saves preparing your own! Although so far I haven't noticed the deduction from my pay - I'm not complaining!

Clockwise from left: Yoghurt drink, battered fish/pork with gravy sauce, kimchi, tofu and seaweed soup, plain rice with chicken and vegetable stew. |
Clockwise from left: Kimchi, spicy spaghetti with vegetables, mixed salad with mayo, banana, dumpling soup with rice balls and plain rice. Stuffed full that day! |
Clockwise from leftt: Chicken wing, potatoes, kimchi, parsimmon, seaweed and egg soup and plain rice. Delicious apart from the tasteless parsimmon (that's Sharon fruit to you guys in the UK). |
Clockwise from left: Noodles with seafood and vegetables, kimchi, crispy seaweed, banana, beef stock, beansprouts and seaweed soup and rice with beans. |
Clockwise from left: Spicy kimchi, battered fish/pork with tomato sauce, apple jelly, sweet kimchi (radish), egg and mushroom soup and plain rice with chicken and vegetable curry! Glad I was hungry that day! |
Clockwise from left: Octopus with vegetables in a gravy sauce, mixed spicy kimchi, sponge cake with peas on top (!), cabbage soup with seafood (similar taste to clams) and purple rice. Everything was yummy apart from the kimchi - had a really odd and strong taste? |
Clockwise from left: Tangerine, beef with rice balls, kimchi, an odd sandwich thing of span and egg, tofu soup with nuts and cabbage and plan rice with corn. Polished this one! |
Clockwise from left: Kimchi, battered fish with mayo, spicy paste (the dinner ladies kindly put it there so I could add to taste - wasn't enough!), tofu soup and bibimbap (my favourite!). Nom nom nom! |
Clockwise from left: Beef, rice cake, kimchi, acorn jelly with vegetable, fish balls with acorn jelly soup, plain rice with corn. Ate the beef, kimchi and rice but too much acorn jelly (tasteless). |
Clockwise from left: Beef and seafood with rice balls, potatoes and fish balls, kimchi, cabbage soup soup with clams and rice with barley. So delicious I almost forgot to take a picture!!! Oh, there is a banana there as well! |
